The Roman Catholic Monastery of the Holy Cross was founded in 1989 and became a Benedictine house of the Subiaco Congregation in 2000. We follow a traditional contemplative life, chanting Psalms seven times a day and singing Gregorian chant at the Eucharist. We do this in a distinctive way by living our monastic life on the South Side of Chicago. Prior Peter, the author of this blog, was appointed Prior in August of 2004.
Georgia pointed out to me that you have not been able to make comments if you are not 'registered'. I've remedied this by changing a preset on the site. So, go to it! I'm eager to read what you have to say! Fr. Peter
What a beautiful site! And thanks to Georgia for taking such good notes and posting the discussion. The thing that was most fascinating in this discussion (I was the guest in attendance) was the explanation of the role of the crusades to protect pilgrims. Br. Brendan made an analogy: imagine if Islamic pilgrims today were being attacked on their way to the holy sites of Mecca and Medina-- what armies would be mobilized to protect them on their journey, and what vehemence would attend the task. Christian pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem would have had a similar significance. That was really helpful and something I didn't know at all about how the crusades started.
As per request for recipe for Chocolate Cake with Zucchini (perfect for August when everyone has Zucchini coming out their ears!)
Ingredients: 1/2 c butter, softened 1/2 c oil 1 3/4 c sugar 2 eggs 1 t. vanilla 1/2 cup milk 1/2 t. vinegar 2 1/2 c. flour 4 T cocoa 1/2 t. baking soda 1/2 t cinnamon 1/2 t. cloves 2 c zucchini, finely grated 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Combine milk and vinegar. Cream butter, oil, and sugar. Adds eggs, vanilla, and milk. Beat well. Mix dr5y ingredients together and add to wet ingredients. Beat well. Stir in zucchini. Sppon into 9x13 pan that has been greased and floured. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top of cake. Bake at 325 F for 40-45 minutes.
I confess that I found this somewhere on the internet a few years ago and didn't record the source.
